Mrauk U: Five Muslim men were caught by local residents in Mrauk U, the ancient city of Arakan, on the suspicion of an arson attack in the early hours of April 14, said locals and township authorities.
After caught, the Muslim men – Shwe Maung, Phutiyr,Uddin Ahmad, Adu Korain alias San Maung and Adu Shobi- were handed over by local residents to an army unit which was patrolling the area. All arrested men are believed to be from Pound Duck village in Mrauk U Township.
Ko Tun Nay Min, who is a social activist in the town, said that they were seized along with some petrol tins that are suspected to have set fire to the town.
“We caught two people at a mountain range near Latsay Kan late in the early hours of the day and later we caught another three Muslim men who were hiding in the top of Mountain,” he said.
According to authority sources, the suspected men are being detained by the police after the army handed them over to the police department in Mrauk U
When Narinjara phoned the police station of Mrauk U, to ask details about the cases but there was not any reply.
A close source to police said that the police are also interrogating whether they are the real culprits who set on fire the town by petrol during the Thingyan happy new year period.
