NLD party members discuss security measures on trip of  Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to Myeik Township

Myanmar’s opposition party will take responsibility in ensuring the security of Aung San Suu Kyi during her trip to southern Taninthayi Region, sources said.

The National League for Democracy would not seek security assistance from authorities, a party member said at a December 18 meeting discussing security measures for the trip.

Suu Kyi is scheduled to start her trip to Kawthoung, Myeik, and Kyunsu townships including Kanmaw village, on December 22.

A small blast occurred on December 14 near a stage where Suu Kyi is to deliver a speech in Kanmaw village, injuring four persons. Local party members visited the blast site to investigate.

“Our leader will have a stopover in Myeik as Kyunsu Township does not have an airport. She will arrive in Myeik via Kawthoung and then proceed to Kanmaw village in Kyunsu Township,” said Phyo Win Tun from NLD party office in Myeik Township.

Suu Kyi is due to address local people in Myeik and meet with township party members. During her speech and tour, the NLD leader will be safeguarded by ward and village party members, he added.

The itinerary has been modified and Suu Kyi will arrive and give a speech to locals in Kawthoung on December 22 and proceed to Myeik in the afternoon. She will also spend the night there.

On December 23, Suu Kyi will deliver speeches in Kanmaw village and Kyunsu Township before returning to Myeik. She will leave for Yangon by air on December 24.
